Chapter One: The Liftoff
I adjusted my bow tie. My wife was waiting for me in the car, so I had to be quick. I grabbed my car keys and took one last glance at the mirror. I looked good for my age. I was 45, but looked about 20. I was slim, muscular, and good looking. I had short blonde hair. My tuxedo looked like something out of a spy movie.
My wife honked the car’s horn. I stepped in front of the door.
“Open.” I commanded. It recognized my voice.
“Goodbye, John Silex.” said an automated voice, as the door slid open. I walked outside. The door closed, and I heard a faint clicking noise as it locked itself.
“What took you so long?” Said Fidelis, as I sat down in the passengers seat.
“Nothing, just spying on the neighbor girl.” I teased. She laughed and started the car.
“So, where would you like to have your last good meal for years, eh?” Asked Fidelis. NASA was notorious for serving bad food on their flights.
“How about… Mare Victus?“ I said.
“Sounds good to me.” Was my wife’s reply.
“Welcome to Mare Victus! Would you like something to drink?” Asked the waiter.
“Sure,” I said, “how about a Coke?”
“I’ll have one, also.” Said Fidelis.
“Ok, I will have it right out.” Said the waiter, walking away to serve another couple who had just walked in the front door.
“So, will you miss me when you’re gone?” Asked Fidelis.
I pretended to think for a minute, then said “Nah.” Fidelis kicked me playfully under the table.
“I wont miss you one bit.” Fidelis said. “I get to brag to my friends. ‘My husband is going to be the first person to be able to breathe the air of another planet’ I’ll say. ‘Wow!’, they’ll say, ‘I wish MY husband could do something like that.’”
“Using me just to brag to your friends. You vile, vile woman.” I said.
“Here you go,” The waiter said, as she bought our drinks to us “Now, what would you two like to eat tonight?”
